2008-2009 Arts Council Programs

24th ANNUAL CHAUTAUQUA IN THE PARK
Saturday & Sunday, September 6-7, 2008
Simpson Park, Chillicothe, Missouri

This two-day, outdoor, juried arts and crafts festival attracts thousands of people each year to Chillicothe’s beautiful Simpson Park to enjoy fine arts, handmade crafts, live entertainment, storytellers, a petting zoo, a farmers’ market and delicious food.

1st ANNUAL AREA YOUTH TALENT COMPETITION
Saturday, November 1, 2008 ▪ 10 a.m.
First Christian Church, 900 Jackson Street

Cash prizes are awarded in this juried competition for area youths aged 6-18. The entry deadline is October 17, 2008. Winners will perform in the opening concert of the Chillicothe Area Arts Council’s 2008-2009 season.

MARILYN ROBBINS IN CONCERT
Saturday, November 1, 2008 ▪ 7 p.m.

Pianist, organist and composer Marilyn Robbins of Trenton, Mo., has played and composed piano and organ music since age six. She is a beloved musician in the Trenton community and has played for thousands of event in Trenton and around the state. Her first CD, “My Gratitude to God,” was produced in the summer of 2008.

CAPTION: Pianist and composer Marilyn Robbins of Trenton opened the Chillicothe Area Arts Council performance season with a piano concert Saturday evening at Chillicothe’s First Christian Church. Concert selections included classic American favorites from Broadway musicals and the pop charts, as well as patriotic music, religious music and some of Robbin’s own compositions. The concert was opened by performances from the first-place winners of two age group divisions in the Chillicothe Area Arts Council’s first Youth Talent Contest.

CARL ACUFF, JR., Show - COUNTRY!

Grammy nominated Country Western singer Carl Acuff, Jr., and his band have performed for sold-out crowds across America for 15 years. The Carl Acuff Jr., Show contains something for everyone including Top 40 Country, Classic Country, Gospel, Nostalgic Rock N Roll from the 1950s, ’60s & ’70s, comedy and a patriotic salute to our military past, present and future!

Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children (children 5 and under are free) and must be purchased at the door on November 15, unless attendees are season ticket holders.

A perfect holiday treat, The Nutcracker has delighted millions of children and adults around the world for decades. The music for this fairy-tale ballet was composed by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky. This production by the Chicago Festival Ballet has received rave reviews for the unique choreography of Kenneth Von Heidecke.

The highly acclaimed Missoula Children’s Theater returns to Chillicothe for a week to teach the art of drama to area children. When the week is up, area children present two performances of the Hans Christian Andersen classic, “The Princess and the Pea.”

When rock star and teen heart throb Conrad Birdie gets drafted into the Army, the nation’s teenagers go haywire and Conrad’s songwriter, Albert, faces unemployment. Albert and is girlfriend hatch a plan to keep Albert employed. On Broadway, Bye Bye Birdie won 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical. Hit tunes include, “Put on a Happy Face,” “One Last Kiss,” and “What’s the Matter with Kids Today?”

The amazingly talented Janice Martin and her trio present music of America’s favorite lyricist and composer, brothers George and Ira Gershwin. Reviewed in the New York Times, Martin is described as, “A violinist with a strong personality. . . splendid, dark, rich-textured tone.”

A JOYFUL NOISE GOSPEL CHOIR

A multi-denominational community gospel choir from Kansas City, Missouri, a Joyful Noise Gospel Choir is a delightful blend of contemporary and traditional gospel.

JOHN HANCOCK
RAGTIME PIANO

Friday, May 8th, 2009 ▪ 7 p.m.
Gary Dickinson Performing Arts Center

Back by popular demand, John Hancock brings down the house with his great sense of humor and fantastic ragtime piano playing. This self-taught musician has played professionally since 1980, performs at many ragtime and jazz festivals throughout the region. Missouri is known as the birthplace of ragtime. John Hancock’s performance would make even Scott Joplin proud!

STRUM & STROLL
A Saturday TBA in April or May
Downtown Chillicothe, Missouri

Strum & Stroll is an annual fine arts festival held around the courthouse square in downtown Chillicothe. Children’s art activates, musical performances, art, and food and fun are a Strum & Stroll tradition.
