Traditional Arts, Modern Fun Highlight Chautauqua ’08
C-T photo/ Amanda McKay With mild temperatures prevailing, the Chautauqua in the Park, sponsored by Hedrick Medical Center, drew thousands of people to Simpson Park. Organizers say the 24th annual two-day installment was well received by vendors and well attended. “Everything went excellent. We had more vendors than ever before,” Natalie Bone, Chillicothe Area Chamber of Commerce executive assistant said Monday morning. Organizers credited the wide variety of arts and crafts, entertainment, games and food, and ideal weather conditions (albeit a bit damp and foggy at times) as reasons for the successful Chautauqua. In fact, Margaret Vance, Arts Council chairman of the Chautauqua board, said Monday that several vendors reported selling more on Saturday than ever before. “Smokehouse Pottery & Wax has been coming here annually and Becky (Wisner) told me that last year was their best year ever (in terms of sales at the Chautauqua). On Saturday, Smokehouse Pottery did better than that,” Vance reported. Food vendors also did well on Saturday, including the vendors selling walking tacos. “They actually sold out (of walking tacos) on Saturday and were scrambling to come up with stuff to prepare for Sunday,” Vance said. She also noted that the vendors were very appreciative of the setting for the Chautauqua. “And people were buying this year more than in previous years,” Vance said, explaining that people were more inclined to walk longer this year because of the ideal weather conditions, and likely found more to buy. A light drizzle started at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, but by then, Vance said, most people had finished their shopping and the event was only a half-hour away from closing for the day. There was some heavy fog in the early mornings, but by 10 a.m. Vance said most of it had burned off. As part of the Chautauqua, three vendors received awards including Moonlight Studios, owned by Mary Beth St. Clair, of Wyaconda, Mo., who won Best in Show, judged by a panel of selected judges affiliated with the arts. She earned a certificate from the Area Arts Council and a $200 cash award. The Students Choice Award, determined by Chillicothe High School Art Masters students, went to G.P. Davis Studios, of Kansas City, Mo. He received a certificate and a $100 cash award. The People’s Choice Award, which is voted on by those attending the Chautauqua, went to Smokehouse Pottery & Wax, owned by Becky Wisner of Chillicothe. She earned a certificate and a $50 award. Drawings were also held and awarded to two lucky people who filled out surveys to help determine the People’s Choice Award. Jenny Snyder of Chillicothe won one drawing and received two tickets to “Bye Bye Birdie” or to an area arts performance of her choice. Another prize - a $25 gift certificate from Piggly Wiggly - went to Patsy Brown, of Chillicothe. |
